What is LiFi Technology?

The full name of LiFi is Light Fidelity. It is a high-speed optical wireless technology. This LiFi technology uses visible light (light emitted from LED bulbs) to transmit digital data.

This technology works like WiFi. Although there are many differences between both WiFi and LiFi.

WiFi transmits data over radio waves, while LiFi uses Visible Light Communication (VLC) to exchange data. This technology works with LED light bulbs.

LiFi is an optical communication technology of Visible Light Communication. Where visible light rays are used. The range of this beam is 400-800 THz.

The data transfer speed in this technology is around 224 Gbps due to data transfer through light, which is about 1000 times more than WiFi. But this technology is not available everywhere. You can just stand under the light of a LiFi LED bulb and use this technology to download movies and videos within seconds.

Another advantage is that with internet service, your room will never be dark. When you turn on the LiFi bulb, the light will come out and the internet will come out.

How does LiFi work?

LiFi works like all other internet devices. Before knowing how it works, you should know what ingredients are used in it. Mainly 3 components are used in this technology.

  2. LED lamps
  3. Photo detector

Another connection is required with these three elements; This is what we call the Internet. I have already given you a piece of information. That is, it transmits data through light.

LED bulbs have some features. It is the right material for LiFi as it has LED bulb light emitting diode and fluorescent component (Fluorescent Component).

Also, data in LED bulbs is transmitted at the speed of light, so LiFi requires high-speed data rates.

The light intensity of this LED bulb changes very quickly. The light is sometimes on and sometimes off. The human eye never sees these lights on and off. But the Photo Detector sees these. All these reasons make LED bulbs the best. To understand the functionality of LiFi you need to understand LEDs.

Procedure

The lamp driver is connected to the internet source and transmits the information from the internet wire inside the LED bulb. Then, the light entering the LED bulb collides with the Photo Detector below, and the Photo Detector easily receives the change in light.

Now the Photo Detector converts the light signal into binary data. and sends it to a computer or smartphone for processing. Later it is converted into audio, video, and image. After that, we can see that data in the respective application.

Like the LED lamp through the lamp driver and then the data from the Photo Detector comes to the mobile. Similarly, the LED lamp can transmit the data from the mobile back to the receiver. It also works on two-way systems—sender to receiver and sender to receiver.

Brief History of LiFi

Professor Dr. Harald Haas founded LiFi technology. The University of Edinburgh, UK enrolled him. He presented his innovation at Tech Talk. PureLiFi has Harald Haas as a co-founder. This thinking will enable us to use LiFi technology in the future today.

According to Harald Haas, we call it visible light communication (VLC) when we send information through the visible light component. Harald Haas initiated a D-Light project.

He devoted much of his time to the project from 2010 to 2012 while at the Edinburgh Institute.

The TED Global Talk demonstrated LiFi technology to the public in 2011. Then, people started to become aware of this technology. As a result, PureLiFi, a company, was promptly launched and it still exists today.

Previously known as Pure VLC, PureLiFi was an Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) company. To expand PureLiFi’s business, the company began collaborating with existing LED lighting.

In October 2011, the company joined other industry groups to establish the LiFi Consortium. Both groups aimed to develop High Speed Wireless Systems.

To overcome the limitations of radio waves, many AC companies started manufacturing Uni-Directional VLC products. However, this technology was very different from Li-Fi.

In 2012, LiFi demonstrated VLC technology. They proved this in a performance held in August 2013, achieving a data transmission rate of 1.6 gigabytes/second using Single Color LEDs of this technology.

A September 2013 press release stated that there is no need for line of sight in LiFi. An October 2013 report said Chinese manufacturers were working on developing LiFi kits.

Russian Company Stins Common Developed a wireless network called BeamCaster in April 2014. Currently, it has a data speed of around 1.25 gigabytes per second.

  2. As the range is limited it can only be used inside a room.
